SAN Storage Guide

SAN storage tools

Use these planning resources alongside the documentation for your array and host. Start with the capacity calculation, then review transport compatibility, access boundaries and the paths available during maintenance. All calculator inputs stay in your browser.

SAN LUN Capacity Calculator

Estimate usable storage from raw capacity and representative RAID ratios, then compare aggregate Fibre Channel bandwidth across active initiators. Read the assumptions beneath the widget before allocating volumes: disk-group width, array reserves and the supported path layout can change the capacity available to a host. No signup is required.

What to collect first

Record raw capacity, the intended RAID layout, the array's reserve requirements, FC port speed and active initiator count. Keep redundant paths and simultaneously usable paths distinct in your notes. The calculator uses fixed RAID percentages and an aggregate bandwidth estimate; it does not model application IOPS, latency or automatic failover.

Turn an estimate into a fabric plan

Read the NVMe-oF transport comparison to check the protocol and fabric choices. Then use SAN zoning and LUN masking explained to document which hosts can reach storage and which volumes they may use. Those decisions give the capacity estimate a specific deployment context.

When a number cannot explain the symptom

If an existing system slows down, keep the calculator result as background for the design. Follow SAN high latency: where to look first for the investigation itself. It separates host queues, credit starvation and shared inter-switch links before examining array activity.
